Internships

Surflight Theatre is currently accepting applications for Internships for the 2008 season.  All interns receive a $150/week stipend and an extra stipend of $25/production for Children’s Theatre work, as well as free housing. All rooms are shared in a large group beach house.  Interns receive design/staff opportunities on the Surflight Children’s Theatre productions.  Internships are extremely “hands-on” with tremendous responsibility, and require flexibility and humor within a rigorous summer stock schedule!  Ability to work long hours a plus! Terrific opportunity to work with professional Designers and Staff as well as get numerous large musicals and Children’s shows on your resume.  All interns have the opportunity to crossover into other technical areas if they have interest in other disciplines.  Internships run May-August or later depending on availability, but are full time positions and only applicants who can commit to the bulk of the summer season will be considered (May 15-Labor Day). Some dates can be flexible if necessary depending on college schedules.

The following Internships are available:

Stage Management: Stage Management interns act as assistants to the PSM’s (who are members of Actors’ Equity Association), assisting with rehearsals, taking blocking, maintaining discipline and serving as deck ASM’s during shows.  Interns also serve as the Stage Manager in charge including calling of at least one or more of the Children’s Shows (adults performing for children). EMC points are also available for those interested in being a part of that program.

Electrics:  Electrics interns serve on the electrics crew for hang and focus, are on deck crew or spotlight for run of shows and may design one or more of the Children’s Shows (adults performing for children).  Electrics interns frequently assist with sound.

Properties:   Interns in properties assist the prop master in all prop areas: shopping, carpentry, soft goods, painting, set dressing, crafting.  Prop interns frequently serve as run crew for MainStage productions.

Costuming:  Wardrobe interns work as stitchers in the costume shop, run wardrobe crew during shows and assist in design for Children’s Theatre.

Scenic Painting:  Scenic Painting Interns are frequently design students who serve as scenic painters for all MainStage shows learning faux finishing techniques, lettering, large drop painting among other things.  Scenic painters assist properties with complicated painting and are in charge of certain scenic elements of Children’s Theatre productions.

Scenic Shop:  Shop interns assist the shop as carpenters, riggers and/or welding.  All skills will be taught if necessary. Interns serve on rail crew or deck crew for shows. Shop interns frequently TD Children’s Theatre shows.

Arts Management: Arts Management interns assist in the theatre office with company and production management duties, assisting the business manager and Artistic Director. These interns will also assist in the box office, front of house, concessions and in technical production for strike and load in. Arts Management interns will serve on run crew for MainStage or Children’s Theatre as necessary.

Applicants for internships should have basic knowledge in the area in which they are applying.  Internships are learning opportunities and staff is expected to train interns in all assignments if necessary.  Interns are generally undergraduates or recent BFA graduates.

 Apprentice Program

The Surflight Theatre Apprentice program is for students between the ages of 14 and 18 and for older students or early career applicants. Apprentices are not paid and must be able to provide their own housing within commuting distance to the theatre.  Only rarely will Surflight  provide housing for Apprentices over the age of 18. Apprentices are asked to commit to at least 4 weeks during the summer season (Memorial Day-Labor Day), 4 days per week, 4 hours per day, but may work more if interested and with parental permission.

Apprentices are scheduled at the convenience of their family; however, they must be available for all performance show calls if the Apprentice is asked to run crew for Children’s Theatre or a MainStage performance, and agrees to the position.

Apprentices may work any part of the day between 10 am-10 pm and are assigned to the shops during the day (costume, paint, scenic, properties) or may assist stage management. They may be assigned to running crew for either Children’s Theatre or MainStage (running spot light or assisting backstage) and are given Apprentice duties which may include serving as the Children’s Theatre mascot and assistant, souvenir program selling, dressing room cleanup, etc..

Apprenticeship is not a guarantee to perform; however, those accepted into the program may also audition to perform, and rehearsals/performance time will count toward time commitment to Surflight.

Applicants between the ages of 18-25 who have housing on or around LBI for the summer may also be considered for Apprenticeships. Occasionally, Surflight housing may be available for performing Apprentices.

Applicants for apprenticeships should have interest in the theatre, and/or a desire to learn.  Experience is not necessary.

Cover letter and dates of availability should be sent via e-mail, U.S mail or fax to:
